Hi all.
I am located in the UK and had a book (from America) for Christmas about making cake pops. For those of you who have not heard of them before it is a cake, baked, crumbled up and mixed to together with frosting, little balls of cake are then made and chilled. A lollipop stick is then put into the ball of cake and then dipped in something called candy melts. The candy melts is where I have a problem.
The first time I made them I used regular cooking chocolate which never set so didnt work. I then managed to get hold of something called Wilton candy melts which have kind of worked out. The only problem is is that they are kind of expensive and hard to get hold of in the UK.
I was hoping someone on here would know of a UK alternative to candy melts. I have been looking on the internet but I dont really know much about the topic. I think I need a chocolate/vanilla coating with a hardening agent in.
Any help would be greatley appriciated. Thank you Esther

Look for "compound coating" which is just what you need. The other readily available brand is Merckens.

In Australia, compound coating is what the supermarkets sell in the cake making area. You usually buy it in buttons.

In your supermarket, like gap said look in the baking area, they will often be under the name of 'easy melt' chocolate buttons or chips (but look for either compound in the wording or in the ingredients things like vegetable oil e.t.c.
