Anyone else experience plastic shavings coming off the mold when scraping chocolate with a bench scraper or taping knife? I've seen countless people use taping knives and stainless steel scrapers of various kinds, but never heard any mention of them actually scraping small shavings off the mold that could get in the chocolate. I resorted to using a plastic scraper, but was wondering if maybe it was just a low quality mold or something? Thanks.

Simply put, your scraper is WAY too sharp. Round the edge slightly.

Thanks, that was next on my list of things to do, just figured I'd ask since no one had ever mentioned anything about it.

I found this to be an issue with some molds I bought on Amazon, but not with some Chocolate World molds I bought. They're both rigid polycarbonate, but the less expensive Amazon ones seemed to be slightly softer or something.
Any suggestions on how to round a scraper edge? Just something like a fine file or sandpaper?

Ya I used different grits of sandpaper up to about 800 grit, still got very fine 'dust' off of the mold. The mold I have is from Amazon, and no matter what angle/very light scraping touch (so light that it probably wouldn't make it through chocolate even) and after rounding the edge of my scraper it still left a tiny amount of 'dust'. So for this mold I'll just use the plastic scraper I have and try other molds with stainless steel I guess.

I have never experienced this Chocolate World molds but have experienced it with the less expensive molds from Amazon. I am strictly sticking with CW molds now.

Hm sounds good, I looked around for molds from Chocolate World but most sites had pretty high shipping costs. Any place you recommend purchasing those molds from?

I just go online and search for CW/free shipping molds, and usually one or two places will have reduced or free shipping.

JB Prince does free shipping on orders over $49. I picked up some great dome bonbon molds there (to match some that I bought off a classified ad on The Chocolate Life). I'm actually going to be switching to hemispheres and am planning to sell the domes if anyone's interested.
