As I posted in the cocoa beans section I have 2 cocoa trees and just got pods for the 1st time on 1 tree last week. I'd like to make chocolate at home, but I realize it'll be a while before I have enough home grown beans to do it.
So I wanted to buy some beans online to try and go through the process. Before I invest close to $500 for the Melanger I wanted to experiment with the rest of it to see if it's something I'd enjoy.
Looking at all the different varieties of beans for sale is overwhelming. What would be the best type to buy to start? I already have a Champion juicer, so I can do that part. If I just use the mortar and pestal for now I realize it will be very course, but should it taste about the same?

No it should not be, you should use a melanger to achieve the minimum fineness. Wet grinder ( melanger) grind and conche simultaneously.
