I want to make my own custom molds and have been Googling the hell out of the topic but have yet to come across conclusive answers. Hoping this community can help.
I've already modeled my design for a bar on my computer and can print hard plastic models on my 3D printer.
I can order food safe silicone and attempt to make/pour my own molds this way. There are also vacuum/thermo-forming machines that will take a sheet of polycarbonate and potentially form molds that way (without melting my 3D print???).
I don't mind investing a little money into this but it's just a hobby right now so I don't want to invest HUNDREDS of dollars into it.
Pros and cons to silicone? To polycarbonate? I have both in store bought versions and I tend to prefer the polycarbonate molds but I'm open to silicone if there's a benefit there.
Has anyone been through this process successfully? Would like to get as close to professional results as possible but it's not like they're being sold at Whole Foods so it's not super critical.
Thanks!
Dan

I've never done this myself, but I'd recommend polycarbonate over silicone. They'll be easier to work with and will give you a nice shine, while I believe silicone will give you a matte finish.
I don't think the vacuum forming process will melt your 3d print. I think the 3d print is at a much higher temperature, but I'd confirm this before trying it.
