Hello All;
I have a humorous story to tell.
When I was growing up, I loved chocolate - just as I do today. At that time I thought the smoothest, yummiest chocolate in the world were "Icy Squares". They literally melted in my hands as I was trying to unwrap them and get them in my mouth.
Second in line were the little solid easter eggs wrapped in tin foil. I'd always get a mesh bag of those every year, and looked forward to gobbling them down.
Well... for the past 18 months I have been making chocolate in my own home, with some of the highest quality beans in the world, and have in my own way become a "chocolate snob" - turning my nose up at many chocolates an chocolate bars that people consider to be "fine". My girlfriend has become the same way.
The other day I was in a confectionery and saw a container of "Icy Squares" sitting on the counter. I had a flash back to my youth, and purchased two - one for Trish, and one for me. I wanted to see if the "icy square passion" was still there, and if I still thought it was the best chocolate in the world.
I got out to the truck, handed Trish hers, unwrapped mine and stuck it in my mouth. Just about that time I looked over to see Trish with a horrible look on her face, scrambling to re-open the wrapper and spit it out. Me.... I rolled the window down, my icy square landed in the parking lot, and I took a long swig of water.
THEY WERE DISGUSTING!!!!
For the next few minutes I smiled, smug in the knowlege that I was on the right track to producing WONDERFUL chocolate, and laughing with Trish at how our experience hammered home the difference between what I can now create, and what the average consumer thinks is good.
In fact if I remember correctly, I still have some of last Easter's "tin foil eggs" in my cupboard. They now leave a lot to be desired.... an awful lot.
Happy chocolatiering everyone!
;D
