In short, no. Fermentation and drying prevent viability in the cotelydon.

Aloha! Seems a bit cool and alot of work moving them back and forth ;inside outside. Is your intention to grow them into trees and produce pods? I could send you some beans if you really want to experiment. Later Sharkman

I think you are going to have a serious problem trying to get pods or fresh beans that you can grow a tree from from OS. Australia has just started it's cocoa industry, google Cocoa Australia. The whole opperation, is geared to starting farms but Australian customs won't let fresh stuff into the country, you have to get the seedlings from them. I don't know that they would send you a single seedling but you could try. Just out of interest you can purchase vanilla orchids within Australia by mail.

Todos,
As a farmer, I notice one huge problem with your attempts to get a plant or seed. Other than the obvious fact that Hawaii or Australia are islands and getting ag. stuff in or out of an island is a huge burden for a reason-disease and bugs! There is a more compelling reason you have been thwarted. Please stop unless you want to personally re-create the blight that ended the production in the 70', 80's and agian in the 90's-STOP! Q: What disease comes from Equador, has a kill rate of 80% and is the sole reason you have a hard time finding a pure strain or non-clone anywhere in the world. A: Look it up and you will find the reason theobroma-cacao doesn't grow there or didn't and probably shouldn't neither Equador nor Africa nor the US.
If you still persist, and understand what your getting into and what the consquences can be if you screw it up the and still want my advice after I just reamed you all, I'd advise that you get something more local in Mexico, get a clone plant and drive it up. It will probably die and if you do keep it alive, feed it correctly, then, in just 6-8 short years you may have a fruit, that is if you know how to pollinate it.
Gods Speed,

No I haven't tried to get a plant or seeds the urls are www.cocoaaustralia.com.au and vanilla is www.vanillaplantations.com/You would be pretty hard pressed to grow a cocoa plant in Brissy it is too low, the actual plantations in Australia are north of Cairns. As you know Cairns is as far from Brisbane as Adelaide (where I am) is in the other direction. The reason I checked it out was because my Dad grows coffee in his appartment in Brissy so I thought what other fun things could you grow. Still it led me to this place and I am going to start making chocolate as soon as I can get some money together for a grinder. Looks like fun

My experience taps out right about 20ยบ North, so I'm afraid I don't have much to offer. Chances are you'll have trouble keeping trees happy in winter, and I have no idea whether you'll have any local pollenators. Best of luck!

Good for you Cosmic, did you get them from one of the growers up in Mosman? Is this a secret source, as I would be interested, I work at a plant research centre and may have access to a spot in a really good greenhouse. I just thought it would be impossible to get any.

I take it that was at the Eca or however it is spelt? My folks caught up with them too at the Cocoa Farm stall. Let me know if you have any luck getting them to grow.

Josh, my wife and I find that we are going to Costa Rica in May. I would like to meet the gentleman there who inputs to this Forum but cannot find a nickname for him so I can contact him. Or is my memory bad and there is no one who lives in CR? Hmmm.
Will appreciate your help, Josh.
