Hey everyone!
I am at a crossroads and have a question for you all. I'm trying to decide which to buy: *I have an opportunity to buy a Ultra 2L (lightly used) on craigslist for 145$. I'm considering modifying it like some members have done on here.
I also am looking at Premier Wonder 1.5L after reading how it can handle the continuous runs and it seems like a very successful model. ~200$
And there is also the newer version the Premier chocolate refiner for $250.
Which would you choose? Is the Premier chocolate refiner worth the extra 50$ over the Wonder model that everyone uses?
Right now I am leaning towards Premier wonder 1.5L.
Thanks for anyone suggestions, help, or insight!
Wes

Hi Wes,
I own two 1.5L Premiers. I would buy the Premier chocolate refiner over the normal grinder. It wasn't available when I bought mine. I have replaced the belts in my grinders with link type belts. I think that cost me about $50. I did not have a problem with the existing belts just wanted to upgrade them. I also replaced the gears ($75) in my first grinder after a year. I ran it two or three times a month and I add nibs directly. All the comments that I have read about the 2L were the same as the 1.5. Everyone seems to like them both. I'm assuming that the $250 1.5 grinder would last longer than my first grinder so the extra cost would be worth it. Of course that is an assumption since I do not own one.
Hope this helps,.

Thank you very much for the response Thomas. I am glad you have had good experiences and it is nice not to have to do the upgrading myself. I'm now leaning towards newer model, premier chocolate refiner.
Any other thoughts are greatly appreciated!

If I want a stone ground, mexican chocolate style (gritty) texture, can I get this by running the wet grinder for a shorter period of time?

Yep, that'll do it. I'd probably just grind the nibs until they're liquid-y, add the sugar and then let it run for a minute or two to allow the sugar to mix in thoroughly before removing it from the grinder.

Hi, it's Erin at indi chocolate.
Full disclosure, I sell the Premier Grinders and Chocolate Refiners. I also use them non-stop.
The Premier Grinders were upgraded specifically from feedback from chocolate makers (many from here) and analyzing what was breaking (including replacement part orders and frequency) when people were making chocolate. The Chocolate Refiners come with the upgrades already made.
If you have a Premier Grinder, you can use the upgraded parts and Upgrade Kit on my website (http://indichocolate.com) but the Premier Grinder warranty no longer applies for chocolate making, it only applies for the Chocolate Refiners. The sizes of the replacement parts are consistent in the 1.5L (Wonder) sizes. There are two 2L models, so you'll want to get replacement parts based on if you have the Tilting or LoPro version. It's all there on the website, I just want you to get the right part for what you need.
We continue to make upgrades to the Chocolate Refiners, so we may well have more upgrades when you're ready to buy. I update that on my website as the new upgrades become available.
Hope this helps clarify.
Happy chocolate making!
Erin
