Much to my dismay, right before Valentine's Day - my Santha just quit on me. It was running fine, and then just stopped. When I depress the power button I only hear a faint hum - and it won't turn the bowl at all. Thank goodness I was just about to pour out the chocolate and temper and mold it, so the batch in it is salvagable. I'm not savvy or mechanically inclined enough to create the Franky that Brad has come up with. Anyone else had this series of symptoms? I've had the machine for about 3.5 years and probably don't use it quite as much as some others on this forum......about 20 lbs of chocolate per month or so. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely it's your belt that's packed it in. They always wear out.
You will need to turn your machine upside down, and undo ALL of the screws around the base.
When you open the machine there will be a lot of black dust from the previous belt, and you'll see that the belt is very loose, or maybe even not on the wheels at all.
Replace the belt, screw the top back on, and you're good to go again until the belt wears out again.
Cheers. Brad

The belt is fully intact, but there was powder inside. The fan thingy on top of the motor is seized and when I turn on the switch there's just a very faint hum and no action. The flywheel turns fine. Now I'm trying to decide between a new motor and getting a new machine - one with the tilt function.....that would be quite a welcome luxury.

I followed the instructions that Brad put up years ago for replacing the Santha motor with a much improved 4m100 1/2 hp motor from Grainger. For someone with the right tools (drill, dremel/hacksaw, and a few wrenches) and a some handiness, it would probably take 2-3 hours. If you can't find a friend to do that for you, you're better off just purchasing a new machine.

Wow - that sounds hopeful. I do have a neighbor who might happily tackle such a project. Thanks! - I'll hunt for Brad's post.

Aloha! Just put a spectra back together myself. New motor and bearings in bowl. Reglued et all. Make sure you use same size pully or the bowl will spin faster and throw chocolate at you[over 5 lbs cacao. Good luck Sharkman

Check the bowl itself, it sounds similar to what mine did a while back and when I looked at all the parts the problem was the epoxy had separated on the bowl. Probably my own fault, I abused the thing. Left it too long in the oven a few times.....
