I have been reading a lot in these forums and have started my own hobby and it has gone one step further. I was wondering if any of you are using different brand of grinders other than santha. I am thinking of upgrading to santha 20 or above. I remember Brad saying in the forum about him using a different grinder/melangeur. If you would coudl you be able to be more specific about the brand and model? Thanks

Hi, I'm pretty new to this forum. I'm looking at purchasing a grindeur/melangeur that will take roasted nibs and grind, refine, conche to the final product. I have looked up the Santha models, but it seems that on these forums I am often hearing of bad things that happen to them. Maybe they're not so bad, but I don't know for sure and I'm not in the States to be able to see one easily. Since I've been reading and researching, I did happen to come across some other alternatives. This company make smaller Melangeurs like Santha, up to 10 lbs, but they also make Grindeurs which go all the way up to 65 lbs. I think they're prices are pretty reasonable too. www.cocoagrinder.com/store/I first saw these on the video of the Mast Brothers Chocolate. I really thought their set-up was marvellous. If anyone has used any of these different Melangeurs/grindeurs from cocoa town, some feedback would be great. I really can't wait to purchase something to get me going... Cheers, Chantelle

Hi Chantelle, I use one of the ECGC65 grnders. I had to bed the rollers in for a few hours and the base had a little leak which they sent me glue to fix. There is no sepearate electric switch so safety-wise the unit isn't up to European standards BUT it does do the job and I will be buying another one when I need to expand. If you have any specific questions let me know. Duffy Red Star Chocolate

Thanks for the info. So if the unit isn't up to European standards it might not be up to Australian standards either. I'll have to look into that. I was going to start off with Something like a santha grinder although now that I've seen the other ones from cocoa town I'm not sure. I don't need to do larger amounts of chocolate right now, but if all goes to plan I will in the near future. Would you recommend skipping the smaller melangeur and just going straight for the grindeur?
Thanks, Chantelle

Hi Chantelle, I started off with a small grinder and spent the best part of a year perfecting recipes and getting to grips with what was needed. I still use it to make test sample batchs. The ECGC issues aren't great - any competent electrician should be able to put a switch into the line; I was trying to list all the problems I had. Duffy
