Hello folks, this is my first post. I am a chocolate lover; I am a survivalist... When the end times are nigh, I'd like to have a basement full of chocolate treats, or enough fixings so I don't have to go thru withdrawals. Because chocolate has a short shelf-life, & because you can't stockpile enough chocolate bars/brownies/truffles/etc. to get you thru the long-war, I hope to store enough raw ingredients to tide me over, periodically whipping up a fresh batch of heaven on those evenings when the snipers have taken the night off... Without getting too involved with grinding whole beans, what is the best route to long term storage of cocoa powder, which ones have the most versatility, and, can I substitute canned butter for cocoa butter? I'm not sure that storing beans and/or rendering chocolate from scratch is the best way for my style, as it seems too involved. I'd just like to stockpile minimally processed ingredients to help me produce the most basic chocolate and chocolate confectionery recipes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVyk5dAU_wUPsychonaut

Yo Nut,
Cocoa powder, sugar and oil. Can and seal them, will last forever or just buy a Herserys bar.

I suppose if you vacuum-seal cocoa liquor (not the booze kind, just unsweetened and unrefined chocolate) in bricks and do the same with cocoa butter it would last almost indefinitely. Any airtight container will store sugar for a long, long time. For space saving, powdered sugar would be better, just make sure it's pure, no cornstarch or flour added. This, too can be vacuum-sealed for longer shelf life.
