I keep stumbling across a cacao/coffee bean moisture meter for sale. Anyone know if these are useful? We've had quantities of both beans on hand but never had any moisture problems.

I was just thinking about one of these. I thought I came across something that mentioned it might be worth testing the humidity of the beans post roast. For sure, it's important post-fermentation to test if the beans have sufficiently dried.

I use a digital meter for measuring humidity of our production. The meter will measure moisture in all grains/beans but must be calibrated for specific type before use. This unit has been in use for more than 2 years and has provided excellent service. It is sold in Brasil, although I believe it to be manufactured outside Brasil. The name Hygron also appears on the meter and possibly is the true manufacturer. The contact is Ind e Com Eletro-Eletronica Gehaka Ltd. Sao Paulo Brasil Tel 11 3759-4400 Fax 11 3758 0727 www.gehaka.com.brThe chamber on the top is loaded with 10-12 beans, tightened to make good electrical contact and power applied. It reads in % of humidity to 1 decimal place. It's a commercial instrument and cost US$ 1500 when purchased. If you are seriously looking for an excellent unit, this will serve you well.
