Hello, I found this popcorn popper while browsing through Sam's Club: www.samsclub.com/sams/stir-crazy-popcorn-maker/prod12810245.ip?navAction=I thought to myself "That would make a good cocoa bean roaster!" It was only $30 so I picked one up! It has a heated bottom plate and a rod that spins, stirring the beans on the plate. If the rod gets stuck it automatically changes direction, so you could walk away for a few minutes and not worry about the beans getting stuck in one position and burning. It roasts the beans just fine. I roasted 1lb of beans and sadly, that is about its capacity without being too bogged down. With 1lb it spins relatively freely, getting stuck and reversing direction only occasionally, and that is because the beans got caught on the side of the dome lid, not because they were too heavy. I feel with much more than 1lb, they would be too heavy for the stirring rod to be effective. For the time being it will work fine for me, but if I ever get into the "business" of making chocolate, then I'll have to spring for a good roaster.
