Hi, could someone tell me what wattage, ampage or horsepower spec Shop Vac they are using with John's winnower design. I am in India, where we don't have access to Shop Vac's, so I'll need to buy something with similar specs, converted into watts or amps.
Thank you for your help.

Thank you very much. I didn't see that one in the plans. Do you think it might work with a 4 - 4.5hp shop-vac? Thank you for your help

With my last winnower, I was using a less powerful shop vac before that seemed to work ok. As the one I'm using seems a little strong, I'd think 4 or so HP should work fine.

Finally got around to building one of these a month or two ago. Mounted it to a cart this past weekend. Still need to build a hopper... Everything is the same, except I'm using pvc valves for the vacuum control and discriminator, and a cyclone dust collector to collect the husks. Pic attached. Works great! Ben, I am working on building one of these for small scale use and I had a couple questions about the picture. Why did you use PVC valves? It looks like you have them wide open right now. Once I have this built, can you help me understand how the vaccum valve and discriminator change the output? I am not sure I understand how the discriminator separates the husk. Did you use the 2 inch cut out by the opening as in John's drawing? If not, why? Lastly, is that the 10 gallon 6.5 hp shopvac? The vacs around me have 1.5 inch hose connections. Did you just step it up and does it affect suction? Thanks for your help!

Hi jjkid. I posted a link to the vacuum I'm using further up in this thread. Its hose fit right onto the dust collector--no stepping up was needed. I used the valves because I thought they'd be easier/faster to build with. Other than the valves and the dust collector, I stuck to John's design. John's posted an explanation of how to tune the winnower here: chocolatealchemy.com/2011/09/12/the-aether-sylph-winnower/#comment-167505Good luck!

I am looking at getting the parts together to build one. Just a couple of questions: 1. What is the black plastic piping called, is it food grade which is why it is used in place of the white piping? Where can I get it, I can't find it in regular hardware stores in Australia. 2. Is there an ideal apeture for the hopper feeding into the champion so not too many beans go into the champion at once, is it likely to be overloaded? 3. Would you mind posting the dimensions of the hopper?
Awesome design by the way, thanks!

Reelchemist: I know this is a very old question, but I dont see an answer. From looking around online, it appears that the black piping is a different material; specifically ABS plastic. White piping is PVC. Both are rated for plumbing both waste and potable water (i.e. food-safe) I ended up by going with the black stuff only because all the parts were available in ABS, while a lot of the parts were not available with PVC - this may just be this local store though. Potentially an issue, I ended up by getting the white piping lengths specifically because it was cheaper, and from the looks of things, this may not need gluing? Excellent segway to my question though...
Are all of these parts glued together or are they just squeezed/fit together so the unit can be taken down for storage? I've got the glue, but I don't know that combining ABS and PVC is going to be an easy thing, likewise I do not have a support structure as of yet, I wanted to get the dimensions of the finished PVC plumbing before getting those materials together.

I'm not reelchemist but I have my own built system at home which works quite well built for $35 from PVC pipes pushed together and an old vacuum that was no longer needed. I haven't glued anything so that, like you say, I can break it down and store it more easily.

Hey Tim,
I screwed my ABS parts together when I made my DIY winnower. Previously, John had his designs posted on the forum. Now that he's selling them, I haven't been able to find those posts again. Makes sense as he's trying to make money off of his design. I've also made a winnower based on the DIY Seed Cleaner (Google it). They both work fairly well. John's design can definitely process more nib in one pass than the seed cleaner. I, however, have had better efficiency with the seed cleaner, but it could be that I didn't quite build my DIY winnower right. Who knows? Just throwing out another option.
Cheers, Dave

The designs are still available on the chocolate alchemy website. A while ago, I linked to the relevant posts in the top post of this thread.

Thanks everyone. The question I posted wasn't to reelchemist, but to anyone who can answer Just thought I'd post an answer to reelchemist's question in case someone else has the same questions/concerns. I'm working from the designs linked at the beginning of the thread. I guess sometimes it pays to read the full thread though as just after I finished modifying my Wye, found out that the valve/port was moved to the pipe directly below the Wye nib drop section. I guess that part will require I dont glue so I can be sure to get the nibs that will collect there I've been doing the winnowing by hand, after cracking through crankandstein. But, now that I'm making larger batches and more frequently, squatting over a bowl with a hair dryer is starting to get a little old...not to mention messy

Does anybody have the plans laying around in a file? Looks like the links don't work anymore just want to get a parts list together

Hi Bankston. I did a search for 'DIY Winnower' on the chocolate alchemy site and found that the links have been changed to have the word blog in the URL. I've updated the links in my original post to point to the new locations.
