Hi everyone
I have winnowed by hand for quite some time and of course it's a very slow process. One good thing about it is that essentially no nibs are lost. By this method, I've found that I generally lose about 17% of the weight of the beans I started with.
I finally bought the Champion juicer and now am using that and the hair dryer method of blowing off the husks. Now I'm finding I lose about 27% of the weight I started with, so I'm assuming that means I'm losing a fair amount of nibs. I'm sure my technique can improve, but after a couple tries I'm not so sure.
Have any of you tracked this metric, and what do you find? Is 27% weight loss normal?
Thanks!

27% loss is about right, 25% would be the target goal in my opinion. I'd say roughly 20-25% of weight is husk, depending on the bean.

I had around 20% of loss, which was initially by hair dryer method, and later with a self-made winnower. It went up a few % when I transferred from hair dryer to winnower. But the other side of the coin is vastly increased speed. Plus not such a mess As lyndon states, percentages will vary a bit with what bean you have.
