I have tried different roasts from long and low too short and high with different beans. I had different EOR temperatures from 90-140 celsius but I haven't heard the beans pop. Is the pop very gentle? I use a drum roaster which makes the beans sound when tumbling around, is this enough disturbing so I don't hear the pop maybe? I know that not all beans pop but I've tried four different beans with no pop. Is there any good explanation? is it my ears that is not listening or how often do u hear the beans pop?
Cheers,

Krizzstroganof, From the sound of it I’m not much more experienced than you. So don’t take my word as 100% truth. I used to roast in my kitchen oven for a year and thought I heard quiet pops when I took them out at the EOR. Then I got a Behmor roaster and I learned what popping was. I would compare it corn popping but slightly less loud. I was shocked at how distinct the sound was. Turns out what I was hearing from my kitchen oven was just slight snapping. Definitely not popping that everyone talks about.
So the next question you have is “why”. There I can’t really help. I can only say that using the Behmor with the rotating drum made all the difference for me.

Drum roasting is harder to hear the pops, but its also possible the pops just don't happen, it's not coffee even though the process is similar, it's very bean dependant. If your temperatures are good, that's what matters

Don’t worry about it, only some beans pop. It’s not a key indicator like in coffee roasting.

I've now roasted 10+ of different beans and stil no pop. The sound of the beans tumbling in the drum could be one reason. I now roast more gentle than before maybe that makes some different also. Anyway the chocolate I'm making is getting tastier and tastier so I'm not worried at all, just interesting to hear about others experience.
All the best,
