I'm completely new to the world of bean to bar and I'm looking for a good grinder that will allow me to get started. I want to have the ability to do anywhere from 1 to 10 pounds per batch. I've heard a lot about the premiere brand, but not much about Ultra. Are there any preferences to brand and model? I would rather not have to modify for overheating, if possible, and I'm on a fairly tight budget (200 to 300 bucks). Any advice would be appreciated!

Any advice would be appreciated! senorblapo, I have two of the Premier tilting melange and they both have been fine. They are $300 from melangers.com and their customer service is good. I just ordered a 20 pound from them and am expecting it any day now. However, you will only be able to do about 8 pounds max in the smaller, table-top melange. And even that's pushing it. Good luck!

mark, Yes I did and it just came Saturday! Yesterday I put it together (after church) and ran it for the required hour with 4.4 lbs. of sugar to season the stones. I then washed it out and am awaiting it to really dry before trying my first batch. I got the model without the pneumatic pressure attachment. I also got the 110v model. First impressions: 1. It was packaged like it was made of the finest crystal. Completely surrounded by self-forming foam. Nothing in either box could have moved at all. 2. It is really heavy. Two boxes both really, really heavy. Just ask my back. 3. Totally stainless, everything you see and touch except the power switch and potentiometer are stainless. Nuts, bolts, surfaces, everything. 4. Direct drive: no belts. 5. Quiet. Really quiet. It is probably 60% quieter than running one of my Premier tilting melanges So far, upon unboxing and preliminary set up I am truly impressed. I can see why it costs what it does. I paid $2500 for the unit shipped. I also added the stainless steel deflector blades for an extra $100, that's how it came to $2500. The blades are thick, sharp and each weighs at least a pound. Now to run it for a while and see the product it produces.

That sounds exciting Chip. I look forward to hearing about your experience with this over the next few months.

mark, Still running my first batch, but the thing I notice the most is that it is so very quiet. Very, very quiet.
