I am not sure when or who asked about an email notification when a thread is responded to, but I have found out how to do it.
Mark the thread as "bookmarked" Go to your profile and click on "Bookmarks" Once in there, modify your bookmark settings. One setting is email notification, as well as PM (personal message)

I've been using this a long time. It works... sometimes.

I've looked at this closely and found I will "bookmark" a thread one day (so I get email notification) then the next, it's gone. I did *NOTHING* to remove it.
It's quite maddening as I tend to get very very busy and often, I have no idea anybody has been posting on my threads until somebody PMs me. I guess it's not that it bothers me so much, as I hate to leave people feeling ignored, but I often don't "browse" these forums for a month or more.
I would personally look into setting up PHPBB or something similar on your own site - you already run PHP, it should be pretty trivial for your webmaster. The only slight headache would be importing the existing data, but that could even be worked out. No ads (at least I think there are ads - I block them all so I never know), no weird bugs, and total control for you.

I understand that can be rather frustrating but this forum is here to stay for the time being. There should be no ads. As for setting up phpbb, it probably be trivial for most webmasters, but in this case, I am my own webmaster. I do everything here. I get by, but you might have noticed, it is not as flashy as many other sites. My focus is on chocolate and beans, not web coding, even though this is a web business. Not perfect, but the way it is.

It says "Ads by Google" In fact, though your site is often in the ads, there are also some other companies selling cacao, whole bean and nib, in the ads every now and then. For example, livesuperfoods.com

The ads generate revenue for him... or possibly the company who is 'leasing' him this board. ON that though, if it is his google account I believe if he can sign into the google account, there is a setting somewhere where you can set types of sites or keywords you dont want crawled to put advertisements up. For example you could tell it NO chocolate, etc so it don't show your competetors ads on your site.

Actually, no, I make NO money from those ads. I have to PAY to have the ads removed. Which, off and on I do, but often it just drops below the radar.
Quick question - would people prefer no ads?

Makes no difference to me. I just block them out these days they seem to be so prevelant on all websites.

I would also really welcome a feature that sends me an email as soon as there is an answer to my posts:) Quite an essential, if not the most important setting in a forum.

It looks like this can be done in a similar way to what the Alchemist suggested all those years ago. Click 'Profile' in the top menu, then the 'Edit Profile' button, then the 'Notifications' tab. There you have the option to receive notifications for various events, either as notifications in the forum (which show up as little numbers on the 'Profile' menu item), or via email. To get emails when someone replies to one of your posts, set the 'Participated' email drop-down to your preferred method (instant, daily, etc.).
This isn't exactly what you asked for, as it will send updates whenever any post you've participated in is updated, not just when posts you've created are updated. But, I think it's as close as you can get with ProBoards.
