So, I've just started my first batch in the premier wonder grinder! I was afraid of over-roasting... now I'm wondering if I under-roasted. The beans have a somewhat nutty and bitter smell. Is the bitter smell a sign that I perhaps under-roasted? They definitely made the house smell nice and brownie-like during roasting, and were popping. I roasted in a convection oven for 5 minutes @ 425, and they were starting to pop - then I turned it down to 300 for 15 minutes.
Aside from wondering if I've under-roasted, the other challenge that I've encountered is how very difficult it is to winnow with a hair dryer! I used a hair dryer on low, and used a large hefty sack to catch the husks. It seemed that a lot of nice nibs were also getting blown into the sack. After winnowing, I had 9.9 out of 15.8 ounces, so lost 38%, which seems high to me. Are there some tricks to doing this more efficiently, or is that a standard loss with the hair-dryer method?
Thank you!
